We left Nuremburg today. Our exit out of the city took us through an industrial area
Bikepaths soon followed
As we progressed in Germany, I started recognizing features I also saw in Czechia. Like this kind of church for instance
As we were having a break near a shop I noticed this flat tire. I ran over a nail and the air slowly leaked out. Luckily Roger helped me fix this one.
Today's goal was Regensburg, the big city at the Donau river. Only 100 km from here
It was a downright beautiful day
Fuchsberg... A lot of climbing today. I noticed the gearing on my bike was just right for this trip. The 32x36 granny gear came in handy on the +11% climbs
Waiting for Roger hehe. He never let me down!
This area is called the Oberpfalzer Wald and I had never been in this particular area
Die Oberpfalz also managed to intrigue Roger
Some hills were relentlessly steep with 15%. Even on this flat section I still see a small rise
So far, so good
Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz was the biggest town on our route. Thar name alone contains a high amount of fantasy. This area was like a fairytale
Regensburg YES, but A3 Autobahn NO
Mysterious skies... On this particular day, a Saturday, traffic was low. The whole day was tranquil and very enjoyable
I have cycled across Germany five times and it won't be the last one. I like rural Germany
I love how Roger loves this trip. For him the feeling of discovery is even greater than for me. He probably wouldn't have done this without my presence and that's what makes it nice. I motivated him to do this big trip and he is doing very well. He will remember all of this with a big smile for many years to come.
And Roger isn't the only one having a good time! Six days in the ride and we almost wrapped up Germany
Idyllic... This is the Oberpfalz region
This was at the top of an 18% hill. Granny gear needed...
Completely understandable that Roger needed his time for that. I would wait for him at the top of every hill and we would continue together. As a Dutch saying goes: Out togetherm In together.
There he is8
Very interesting: a German friend of mine is called Kuhn and her family is from the Regensburg area. Is this a coincidence.
Entering district Regensburg
Will we get some rain?
East Germany is so beautiful
16%? Bring it on! We've been eating hill after hill the whole day long!
As the day ended, we were approaching Regensburg and that is very meaningful on our trip. It means we have successfully wade our way through hilly Germany and we can now follow the Donau all the way across Central Europe.
Roger meets Donau
Ladies and Gentlemen, introducting you to Regensburg, the beautiful city located at the Donau river.
Some drops of rain put the Regen in Regensburg
We had a Chinese meal in the city center and I was able to buy a bike pump from a small bike shop. It would allow us to tackle emergencies if we encountered any.
Since it was the height of the summer and we still had some daytime left, we decided to go to the Donau cycling path and find a camp spot right next to the river. It was already past eight pm and we added another 20km
With Regensburg behind us, we were following the Donau further east
The first Saturday evening of the trip, special feeling to look back and to understand what lies ahead
Not many cyclists here, only a lot of bugs and flies hehe
At some point we felt it was time to call it a day and we looked for an adequate camp spot
At some deserted spot which we both deemed acceptable, we unpacked our bikes and started our usual routine
Two tents neatly along the Donau, with the bikes locked. Not being alone on this leg of the trip truly makes a big difference for me. Thanks for coming out here Roger!
In the middle of the night I woke up and the moon was shining and reflecting on the water. Magnificent view.
