20. 22/07/2017: Wild dogs, drunk robbers and a humane touch on a thunderstorm Saturday night

112km, 5h33, 713hm

The third Sunday of the trip, halfway of my time together with Roger. The trip was going fast but luckily it was all going super smooth. We had a lovely breakfast in that hotel and then we hit the road again, for another 100km+ chunk.

Today we had many ups and downs, in the road I mean. The road was constantly ascending or descending.

Again very warm...

Out of the blue these cows were crossing the road. Cars were obviously used to this.

Even though this area is next to the Donau there were many hills

Stopping for pictures was very regular here.

This whole area seemed surreal and not like Europe.

It looked more like the Taroko Gorge in Hualien

Haha lol...

11 percent slopes, we had many of those today

We were on our way to Orsava, the only BIG town we would pass in Romania

We stocked in on supplies in Orsava and then we continued to Dr Severin.

There was a very scary section of few kilometers that looked like a freeway. Big trucks closely passing us on high speed. I detested it and I could not believe the Donau cycling route would send us through such a road. Luckily we made it out alive.

Serbia was still across the river. We saw only one bridge for the whole section we cycled across.

When there was a shoulder to cycle on, it was still acceptable, but often there wasn't any. Scary!

When we reached the town of Drobeta Tr Severin our ordeal was over.

As we entered the town we heard thunder from the skies and later we saw lightning. We decided to go to a bar and hide it out for a while. It was super hot and we instantly thought of day 4 of the trip in Germany with the horrible camp night

We found a little bar to sit and relax.  We sat there for almost three hours

It was 45 degrees, insane hot in the Balkan

We started cycling again at 17.00 when the temperatures became more bearable

The skies started getting darker and it was obvious that the weather might not be so great

Other than that there were many wild dogs that chased us.

It was late and we tried to look for a camp spot, but with these wild dogs we kinda agreed to not camp. We would look for a little pension to stay. But we did not find one, even though we asked many people. We were running out of daylight and still no options. Until we reached a small village

We also stopped in a small place for dinner, but they only had bread and sodas. Al of the sudden it turned into a big Romanian party. The whole town came and we explained our itinerary.

Cycling late into the evening looking for a place to spend the night

The Saturday night Romanian party we attended

To make matters worse, the skies got dark and we heard the sound of thunder and we even saw lightning. The fear of that night in Germany struck us and we wanted to find a roof above our heads badly. We asked for some directions in a village and we could stay on the central courtyard, but we were warned for all these drunks who would come and rob us in the middle of the night. So that was not a good idea either...

Salvation came from a man named Lau Turcila, who invited us to come to his house, a bit further in the field, but no robbers and we could stay inside the house. Considering the circumstances we could not refuse. We saw a very poor family that showed their humane side and took us in. The very warm side of other human beings. That is how we made it through this crazy night
