16. 18/07/2017: From Mohacs Hungary via Croatia into Serbia all in one day

135km, 6h26, 158hm

After a breakfast at our Mohacs hotel, we set foot outside for day 16 of this trip

Today we would go south of Mohacs, exit Hungary, do a small section in Croatia and continue into Serbia

It was about 14 km to the Croatian border. It was another summer day in all glory

The road to Croatia...

That guy has been following me ever since I left Belgium!

I did not expect a real passport control between to EU countries but yes I had to show my passport. They needed quite some time for Roger, since they did not see that Taiwan was a country. I saw on the computer screen that Taiwan was enlisted under Other Territories. Quite interesting...

But we were here, in Croatia! It sounded so exotic

Croatia, Hrvatska in Croatian. I actually only know one person from this country, Marina Simunac, a colleague of mine at Medtronic.

Cycling in Croatia...

Eurovelo Route 6 passes through Croatia, albeit a small section. It counts as a new country, so we were gladly coming here.

Roger in the Balkans

We looked for a doctor to take care of Roger's knee. On this morning they were all closed. I asked a woman down the street for a hospital and she gave me instructions in fluent German. So marvelous.

Eurovelo 6 under a beautiful summer sky

Our time in Croatia did not last long, the Serbian border was close already

Some photos before entering Serbia, which meant leaving the European Union.

Border control and passport stamps...

The border between Serbia and Croatia was the Donau bridge. The space in between was a no man's land

Eurovelo 6 stands aloof from political world affairs, it doesn't care about European Union or not, it just goes where the Donau streams. Sombor was the first city on Serbian side.

Dobrodosli k Sirbiju! Welcome in Serbia!

Cycling in Serbia, crazy!

In Serbia, our route had three main dots: Sombar, Novy Sad and Belgrade.

The Serbian tiny roads... Traffic was low and it was as flat as the Netherlands

We got Serbian dinars from the bank, studied the map and made a decision where we would spend the night. These places are so cheap that we would not bother camping in the tent.

We cycled until late in the evening to a place called Backa Palacka. There was a very basic hostel there with restaurant.

The charm of rural Serbia

Our place for tonight! In spite of the two border controls we went through, we still cycled 135km. Not bad!
