120km, 6h07, 1177m
The morning came and we understood that we had one last European task ahead of us: cycling across Bulgaria. Judging the size of the country and the topography, it would be around 5 days of work. We had breakfast in the same place where we had dinner last night and we hit the road for a new chapter and a new feelng.
Montana was the first big knot in our rope today.
Bulgaria clearly lacks cycling infrastructure, but then again, the traffic was low
Bart the Belgian biking in Bulgaria, that's a lot of B's
35 km since we left Vidin, the capital Sofia in 210km. But we would not pass the capital anyway.
Obshina, the Bulgarian word for region/province. Actually most people in Bulgaria understood Russian and the writing is in Cyrillic. I was able to communicate with them.
Dark clouds and chilly weather. It was a lot more pleasant than scorching hot Romania though
On our way to Montana. The vast open countryside of Bulgaria was enticing
Roger in Bulgaria...
Whoops, looks like someone missed their turn...
After Montana, we continued towards the Southeast. There was quite some climbing today. I thought Bulgaria was mainly flat, but I was wrong!
Making sure my buddy was following. We had to cycle behind each other on these roads for safety
This side of Bulgaria reminds me of Czech republic, with these open plains full of hills with tiny mountains in the background. Quite similar indeed...
Vratsa, the next town on the map
The afternoon part was lovely. It seemed like we would again ride 120km. That mileage brought us wonderfully on schedule
Bulgaria in the summer
We spent the night in a place called Mesdra.
